2024 Young Professionals Innovation Competition Winners

ACC held the 2024 Young Professionals Innovation Competition during the AAAE/ACC Airport, Planning, Design, & Construction Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah. 

The first-place team included John Holmes, Aviation Engineer with RS&H, Courtney Gantt, Environmental Consulting Associate with RS&H, Derek Nadeau, Aviation Engineer with Jacobs, and Dillon Chado, Director of Facilities at the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. Their project, Modified Microgrids: Integrating Electric Vehicles to Support the Airport Energy Evolutionproposed a solution to operational challenges airports experience concerning energy-related issues, including:

  • High energy costs and growing energy demand
  • More extreme natural threats and man-made hazards to the electrical grid
  • The electrification movement and accommodating evolving technology such as electric vehicles (EVs)

The second-place team included Thomas Rigal, Development Analyst with Edgemoor, Allyson Schaer, Project Engineer with The Weitz Company, Nick Winter Sr. Architectural Professional – Transportation Studio with Skidmore Owings & Merrill, and Xialu Xu, Associate – Transportation Studio with Skidmore Owings & Merrill. Their project, Next-Gen Holdroom: A Flexible Space for Diverse Passenger Experiences & Optimized Operations, explored how airport hold rooms can be designed to tame the chaos travelers experience while designing a more inclusive space for passengers with diverse needs.
